El diseño, al integrar en su propuesta la utilidad con la estética, cumple con la función de transformar la realidad no solo desde la perspectiva de lo utilitario, ya que la estética es ese componente ético social que imprime en la propuesta arquitectónica espacios que conmueven el alma.

El Maestro Recinos siempre manifestó en su obra esa capacidad crítica y no pocas veces lúdica de tocar las fibras mas sensibles de nuestro ser. La comunidad universitaria dice un hasta pronto a uno de sus más ilustres maestros, su obra hablará por siempre a las futuras generaciones.

In the 20th century, architectural magazines had a key role as vehicles for news transfer and exchange of opinions, written or constructed; in the years of the eruption of modernity architectural magazines became the media to strengthen convictions and reaffirm achievements as well as regular channels for manifestos, the dissemination of ideas and the defense and exposure of new aesthetic principles and goals. Afterwards, the proliferation of magazines and the loss of its status as a showcase of a new society, led to distorting the meaning of its contents, empty of conceptual novelty and almost exclusively full of formal innovation, though still a vehicle for exchange of concerns and achievements.

Viipuri Library- nominated by the Finnish-Russian Restoration

The Viipuri Library in Vyborg, Russia, was designed and built by modernist Finnish architect Alvar Aalto between 1927 and 1935. At the time of construction the land was held by Finland. However, as a result of shifting borders during WWII, Vyborg became part of Russia. Aalto’s library is considered a milestone in the history of modern architecture. The building exemplifies features that would later become defining characteristics of Aalto’s modernist work.

6 September. ICCROM is conducting a needs assessment on documentation in conservation. This is to determine the needs of professionals and gauge their interest in continuing with the ARIS (Architectural Records, Inventories and Information Systems Conservation) courses, held between 2003 and 2009.

Good conservation decisions are made with knowledge of the significance, history, past interventions and current conditions of cultural resources. This is collectively known in the conservation field as documentation and includes research in historical records, inventories, measurement and imaging tools as well as information management.

Please take a few minutes to fill out our survey. Your responses will greatly assist us in designing future courses and focusing our efforts more effectively. All responses will remain anonymous.

The Asturias Association of Architects, the International

Selection Committee ISC/R of DOCOMOMO International and the Foundation DOCOMOMO Ibérico would like to invite architecture professionals and any other professionalsinterested in the subject to submit an abstract fitting to either thematic section.

The aim of the International Seminar to be held in Spain in 2010 is to re act on the influence of technology on the emergence of modern-movement architecture and on the new view that would lead to change in the interpretations of all artistic experiences.

The scientific committee will select a minimum of 6 abstracts for their further development and presentation at the Congress. Furthermore, the scientific committee may select other abstracts to be published in the Congress Proceedings.

The process will follow the following schedule:

February 22, 2010: Deadline for abstract submission (must not exceed 2100 characters)

February 26, 2010: Selection of abstracts by the scientific committee

March 3, 2010: Notification of acceptance to the relevant authors

April 9, 2010: Deadline for submission of the final text of the papers accepted (must not exceed 8 pages, 16800 characters, and 12 images)

Docomomo_gt presente en 1er. curso de Conservación en Arq. Moderna

El pasado mes de marzo, el Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Conservación Integrada ─CECI─, el Centro Internacional para el Estudio de Conservación y Restauración de los Bienes Culturales─ICCROM─ por sus siglas en inglés, apoyados por Docomomo-Brasil y la Universidad Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), Brasil, inician el 1er. Curso Latinoamericano sobre Conservación de Arquitectura Moderna- MARC-AL.

La finalidad de esta nueva iniciativa por las entidades brasileñas es: "formar nuevos profesionales capaces de entender los valores de la arquitectura moderna, identificar los problemas relativos a su conservación y, consientes de las teorías de conservación, ser capaces de intervenir en los edificios, trazando planes de conservación encaminados a dar soluciones".

Por esta misma razón, los arquitectos que forman parte de la Junta directiva de Docomomo Guatemala: Dr. Arq. Raúl Monterroso, Msc. Arqta. Sonia Fuentes, Arq. Rafael Aycinena y Msc. Arq. Edwin Saravia, particpan en el desarrollo del curso, con la finalidad de fortalecer el conocimiento de la conservación del patrimonio moderno.

El curso tiene una duración de 360hrs. (240 en línea y 120 presenciales).

Durante el aprendizaje, cada uno de los participantes ha estado desarrollado por fases la detección de valores, patologías, teorías de conservación, etc., de un edificio moderno en la ciudad de Guatemala, para culminar con una propuesta de conservación.

Esta propuesta será desarrollada en el módulo presencial que se llevará a cabo en la ciudad de Pernambuco, del 3-27 de noviembre, con el apoyo de otros profesionales.

ChirmolCity es una iniciativa de la Municipalidad de Guatemala a través de URBANÍSTICA ─Taller del Espacio Público─, cuyo objetivo es hacer visible el enorme potencial que se encuentra en el área central de la ciudad de Guatemala, sobre todo, dentro del territorio que enmarca el Proyecto Urbano Corredor Central, Aurora Cañas.

En dichas áreas de la ciudad, se pueden encontrar magníficas obras arquitectónicas de carácter patrimonial, para lo cual, la gestión municipal apoya y participa activamente en acciones enfocadas a: revalorizar y conservar el patrimonio arquitectónico y urbano; siendo parte de la Asociación Internacional de Ciudades y Entidades de la Ilustración ─AICEI─ de la cual es subsede para Iberoamérica.

También está representada por el grupo guatemalteco de trabajo para la Documentación y Conservación de edificios, sitios y barrios del Movimiento Moderno ─docomomo_gt─.

A través de esta iniciativa, la AICEI, URBANÍSTICA, y Docomomo Guatemala, convocan al concurso fotográfico sobre el patrimonio urbano/arquitectónico de la Ilustración y la Modernidad en la ciudad de Guatemala.

Presentación y mesa de discusión -docomomo_gt

Con el apoyo de la Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, URBANÍSTICA ─Taller para el espacio público de la Municipalidad de Guatemala─ y la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, Docomomo Guatemala realizó su presentación oficial ante la sociedad guatemalteca, el pasado 17 de febrero.

Esta actividad fue realizada en la casa Ibarguen, en el centro histórico de la ciudad capital, con el objetivo de dar a conocer a toda la sociedad, la misión y visión del capítulo; así como, la necesidad de registrar, catalogar y conservar los valores significantes del Movimiento Moderno en Guatemala.

La disertación contó la presencia de varios profesionales de la arquitectura, artistas y estudiantes de diversas universidades del país, quienes a su vez expusieron sus inquietudes ante la junta directiva de Docomomo Guatemala, dando lugar a una mesa de discusión.

Finalmente se dio a conocer el programa de trabajo programado para este año, contando con el interés y el apoyo del público presente para su realización

Guatemala adscrita a Docomomo Internacional

El pasado 13 de septiembre de 2008, se celebró en la ciudad de Rotterdam, Holanda, el décimo congreso de Docomomo internacional, con el tema central The Challenge of change: “Dealing with the Legacy of the Modern Movement”, en las antiguas instalaciones de la fábrica de té, tabaco y café Van Nelle.

Durante este congreso se llevaron varias actividades para estudiantes: talleres y seminarios, visitas guiadas a la facultad de arquitectura de Tu Delft, centros de investigaciones, laboratorios de maquetas, etc.

Los diferentes capítulos que conforman Docomomo internacional, asistieron a la inauguración oficial a cargo de la presidenta Mariestella Casciato en la facultad de arquitectura de Tu Delft, en Rotterdam, Holanda, seguido de una visita guiada a las instalaciones del campus universitario.

Posteriormente se inicia con las actividades programadas, entre ellas, la disertación de cada una de las ponencias por parte de los capítulos con la flexibilidad de asistir a los diversos talleres que paralelamente se efectuaban. Dos ejes abordan cada una de las temáticas: Cambio y Continuidad, que contienen temas como la conservación, tecnología, urbanismo, sustentabilidad y educación, entre otros, aplicados al Movimiento Moderno.

La junta directiva de Docomomo Internacional, convoca a la reunión paritaria, donde cada uno de los capítulos expondrán los avances realizados para la conservación del Mo.Mo., de igual forma se dan a conocer las nuevos postulantes, entre ellos Curazao, Canadá y Guatemala.

El Dr. Arq. R. Monterroso, presenta la candidatura de Guatemala ante la comunidad internacional, exponiendo el legado histórico/arquitectónico que el país posee y dado el compromiso de salvaguardar la rica herencia cultural, Guatemala se compromete a velar por la conservación de todo los monumentos del Mo.Mo, con la ayuda y respaldo de la Universidad de San Carlos, la Facultad de Arquitectura, Urbanística: Taller del espacio público de la Municipalidad de Guatemala.

Al concluir con el informe de cada uno de los países, la junta directiva de Docomomo Internacional, convoca a la votación general para la aceptación de los nuevos postulantes, dando como resultado el voto absoluto para el nuevo capítulo de Guatemala.

¿POR QUÉ DOCOMOMO?

En las últimas décadas, la herencia arquitectónica del Movimiento Moderno, ha estado en más riesgo de ser destruida que durante cualquier otro período. Esta herencia edificatoria glorifica el espíritu dinámico de la Era de la Máquina.

A finales del los años 80, muchas obras maestras modernas fueron demolidas o alteradas a tal grado que ya no se pueden reconocer.

Esto sucede, principalmente, por el hecho que muchos de estos edificios no fueron considerados elementos patrimoniales.

HISTORIA

Docomomo Internacional es una organización no lucrativa. Fue fundada en 1988 por Hubert-Jan Henket, arquitecto y profesor y Wessel de Jonge, arquitecto e investigador, en la escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad Técnica de Eindhoven, en los Países Bajos.

En el año 2002, el secretariado Internacional se reubica en Paris y actualmente sus oficinas se encuentran instaladas en el Palacio de Chaillot, en lo que hoy se conoce como La Ciudad de la Arquitectura y del Patrimonio.

Desde el año 2002 hasta la fecha, la dirección y la secretaría general de Docomomo Internacional ha estado a cargo de Maristella Casciato, arquitecta e historiadora y Emile d’Orgeix, historiadora de la Arquitectura, respectivamente.

Las principales metas de Docomomo se pusieron de manifiesto en las conclusiones de la conferencia inaugural en 1990 celebrada en Eindhoven y son las siguientes:

Llevar el significado del Movimiento Moderno a la atención del público, las autoridades, los profesionales y la comunidad académica relacionada con el entorno edificatorio.
Identificar y promover registros de las obras del Movimiento Moderno incluyendo catalogación, gráficos, fotografías, archivos y otros documentos.
Fomentar el desarrollo de técnicas y métodos apropiados de conservación y divulgar este conocimiento a las profesiones involucradas.
Oponerse a la destrucción y desfiguración de obras importantes del Movimiento Moderno.
Identificar y atraer fondos para realizar actividades de documentación y conservación.
Explorar y desarrollar el conocimiento del Movimiento Moderno.

LA MISIÓN DE DOCOMOMO ES:

Actuar como guardián cuando cualquier edificio moderno importante se encuentre bajo amenaza de ser dañado o destruido.
Intercambiar ideas relacionadas con conservación, tecnología, historia y educación.
Fomentar el interés en las ideas de la herencia del Movimiento Moderno.
Inculcar la responsabilidad de resguardar la reciente herencia arquitectónica.

Desde su creación, Docomomo Internacional ha experimentado un crecimiento rápido, estableciéndose, no sólo como el mayor protagonista en el campo de la conservación sino que también en el amplio campo de la cultura arquitectónica.

La naturaleza pluralista y multidisciplinaria de Docomomo Internacional, ha sido de sus mayores logros ya que reúne a historiadores, arquitectos, urbanistas, conservadores, profesores y estudiantes.

Actualmente, Docomomo Internacional lo conforman 52 capítulos y más de 2000 miembros, desde Europa hasta Japón, desde Australia hasta Norte, sur y ahora Centro América. En la variedad de culturas y experiencias redunda la riqueza de esta organización.

Guatemalan Architecture and the emblematic buildings of the Modern Movement

Guatemala, with an immense architectural and urban legacy from its Mayan roots, tells its own history and ideological development through its artistic and cultural manifestations, Architecture is one of these that expresses the people’s spirit.

The aesthetic expressions are the result of a fusion between the folklore and the academy. Nevertheless; it is said that after the arrival of the Europeans, the construction systems and construction equipment, were changed and adapted to the geographic and topographic characteristics of the area, since non of old treaties of Serlio or Palladio brought by the conquerors were reproduced with accuracy due to the intense seismic activity that prevails in the country.

For that reason the concept of the Baroque and Ultra-Baroque styles would acquire a very particular and original adaptation that only could be obtained in this country. Besides the earthquake of 1773 forced the colonial settlement of Santiago de los Caballeros moved to a new location in the nearby valley La Ermita in 1776.

When independence took place, most important buildings obeyed to the style of foreign architecture, one of the reasons why most of them have neoclassical ornamentation but their disposition in terms of architectural space adapted to the natural surroundings where it is located.

After seven decades of liberal governments, the change came of 1944 democratic revolution and with new prevailing policies, the private architectural practice decreased, although a new era was arriving. By this time some of the first public modern buildings began to emerge.

Surpassing the recession and the old prevailing paradigms, between 1950 and 1968, the architectural production began to formulate space alternatives for society’s new needs. The most important was that conceptualization would take a different direction: concrete plane roof replaced the Spanish clay tile roof and the old bell towers and domes gave place to a new skyline.

This architectural legacy was possible because of the visionary work of masterful architects like Roberto Aycinena, Jorge Montes Córdoba, Carlos Haeussler, Raúl Minondo, Pelayo Llarena, among others, who left a legacy to Guatemalan history with the construction of the Civic Center and the State’s University central campus.

Civic Centre

The buildings of the Civic Centre was conceived as an urban unity, where sculpture and murals were a part of the architectural body, in such a way that if they ever separated, that unit would be disintegrated, losing its rhythm and sense.

Architect Aycinena, then Chief Designer of City Hall, was in charge of planning this work, which, according to his evaluation, has been very much respected.

The new proposal, united by means of a subtle guiding threads, -the murals of Maestro Carlos Mérida- consisted in creating a civic landscape with artificial elements. Within the architectural values of the group of buildings forming this center it is worthy to emphasize the solution for lightning and ventilation, accomplished through the orientation of structures and the use of brise-soliel and plastic integration between murals, sculpture and architecture.

Possibly it is difficult to conceive the magnitude of this project, since urban proposal was never completed, however, using your imagination, you can take a glimpse of what would have been the unit of plazas of horizontal circulation that would develop on the roof of the first floor of Bank of Guatemala building to conduct pedestrians from a train station –located exactly behind this bank- toward the City Hall and to the Cultural Center Miguel Angel Asturias.

His sculpture is characterized by synthesizing of human figures and other elements.
Author of the murals of the Guatemalan Social Security Institute (west facade) and National Mortgage Credit Building (east facade)

Carlos Mérida (1924-1984)
Painter.
He traveled abroad, and therefore had the opportunity to meet Pablo Picasso, Diego Rivera, Roberto Montenegro, Jorge Enciso and other artists.
He designed the cover of the first edition of the book "A man who looked like a horse" by Rafael Arévalo Martínez.
He settled in México where he devoted himself to painting easel and the mural.
Edited several portfolios of prints that, include indigenous Guatemalans and Mexicans costumes. He made several exhibitions nationally and internationally.
In addition to the murals that designed and implemented in Guatemala, within the Civic Center, in Mexico is the Multifamiliar Benito Juárez buildings. Also the Museum of Modern Art in Guatemala bears his name.

A continuación, mostramos una serie de imagenes que registraron todo el proceso constructivo del Centro Cívico en Guatemala, así como las primeras propuestas arquitectónicas que posteriormente darían paso a su ejecución; a cargo de los arquitectos: Jorge Montes, Raúl Minondo, Carlos Hausseler, Jorge Montes Córdoba, y los maestros plásticos, Carlos Mérdida, Efraín Recinos, Roberto González Goyri, Dagoberto Vásquez.

Todas ellas reúnen en su momento histórico, un paso significativo hacia la evolución del pensamiento social guatemalteco.

Cada imagen muestra cómo los antiguos edificios que albergaron en su tiempo ─como lo es la antigua penitenciaría, el traslado de la iglesia de El Calvario─ las antiguas funciones públicas, sufren el traslado o bien la demolición; para dar paso en definitiva a los nuevos edificios públicos administrativos.

Constructive Process of Civic Center, Guatemala City

Here, we show a series of images that recorded the whole construction process of the Civic Center in Guatemala City, as well as the first architectural proposals that subsequently would give away to its construction the in charge were: Jorge Montes, Raul Minondo, Carlos Hausseler Jorge Montes Cordoba, and teachers plastics, Carlos Mérdida, Efraín Recinos, Roberto González Goyri, Dagoberto Vásquez.

All images gather, at their historic moment, a significant step towards the evolution of social thought Guatemala.

Each image shows how the old buildings that once public oficcer ─ like the old penitentiary, the relocation of the church of El Calvario ─ relocation or demolition that ultimately makes way to new public administrative buildings.

El edificio del Crédito Hipotecario Nacional ─de aquí en adelante CHN─ , contiene una estética arquitectónica recurrente al pensamiento moderno,─ principalmente al racionalismo/funcionalismo, que es evidente no solo en su emplazamiento sino la experiencia espacial de toda su configuración geométrica, por lo que hace notar evidentemente su esencia reflexiva , o como bien dice Lewkowicz “Si el objeto arquitectónico se define como arquitectónico, es razonable imaginar que la misma arquitectura dispone de una reflexión capaz de calificar al objeto en cuestión como propio.”[2]

Por otro lado, cuando toda obra arquitectónica ha solventado con gran eficiencia la necesidad espacial — (ver imagen No.1) — y sus funciones a servir, adquiere un valor funcional, es decir, cuando todas las necesidades ha sido solucionadas, pero con la única variante que no haya surgido ningún cambio desde su origen.

Retrospectivamente los edificios fueron pensados y creados para las mismas funciones que hoy día aún la mantienen, por lo tanto sigue manteniendo su valor, como bien dice Heideger “…de este modo, las auténticas construcciones marcan el habitar llevándolo a su esencia y dan casa a ésta esencia.”[3]

Lamentablemente no se pudo tener acceso a la distribución espacial en planta del edificio, naturalmente por cuestiones de seguridad. Sin embargo, nos atrevemos a mencionar que la configuración geométrica fue solventada con gran eficiencia. No podemos decir que es una obra inédita, ya que el pensamiento predominante de la época─ como se ha mencionado con anterioridad─ ha sido recurrente al racionalismo/funcionalismo y la cual hace connotar por medio de la repetición de módulos así como ritmos en sus paramentos, simetría, masividad y escala monumental.

Por otra parte, como es bien sabido, toda obra contemporánea a la época se remite a espacios modulares y repetitivos, el juego del espacio interior/exterior a través de los muros cortinas y su eminente integración, simplicidad de formas y una geometría básica, así como la exposición de sus materiales sin ninguna aplicación.

De igual forma, no teniendo acceso a los planos del conjunto no se puede establecer el carácter estructural con precisión, sin embargo, se puede establecer el perfecto funcionamiento de su estructura y naturalmente la transmisión de cargas como lo muestra las imágenes de antaño cuando recién se construía el edificio. — (ver imagen No.2,3,4) —

Podemos observar que tanto las estructuras portantes como las losas y entrepisos obedecen a una retícula espacial (losa nervurada) en concreto reforzado, naturalmente correspondiente a la época, donde la presencia del hierro como estructura portante (vigas, columnas, etc.) era nulo.

Por lo tanto el valor estructural en la obra es inequívoco y se adhiere a la obra arquitectónica.

Es así como el empleo del hormigón reforzado, y las losas reticuladas, para su estructura básica hacen que el edificio en mención posea una eficiencia eficaz. De igual forma los muros de cerramientos como lo son los tipos cortina son recurrentes al periodo racionalista de la época. Entonces podemos afirmar que el sistema constructivo empleado para éste caso, ha solventado en gran medida la solución espacial, por lo tanto este ítem se aúna a la propia estética del edificio.

National Mortgage Credit Building

The the National Mortgage Credit Building contains a recurring architectural aesthetics to Modern Thought, mainly to rationalism / functionalism, which is evident not only in their location, but the space experience its entire geometry, so obviously notes essentially reflective, as well Lewkowicz said "If the architectural object is defined as architectural, it is reasonable to imagine that the same architecture has a reflection of the object in question qualify as own. In retrospect buildings were designed and created for the same functions that they mantain today, therefore they still maintains their it value, as well Heideger said "… thus, the real buildings mark the habitat and taking it to its essence, and give home to its essence. "[3]

Unfortunately it was not possible to give access to the spatial distribution in the building's floor plan, naturaly security issues. However, we dare to mention that the geometry configuration was solved with great efficiency. We can not say that it is an unpublished work, like the dominant thinking of the time ─ as mentioned earlier ─ has been the recurring to rationalism / functionalism and which connotes through repeating modules and rhythms in their adornments , symmetry, massive and monumental scale parameters.

Moreover, as is well known, any contemporary work of the time refers to modular and repetitive spaces, the play between interior and exterior through courtainwall, its eminent context integration, simplicity of forms and basic geometry, and the exposure of their materials without any application.

Likewise, by not having accessibility to the floor planes of the buildings can it be established with precision the structural charges, however, the perfect funtion of the structure and of forces can be established as show on the following images ─(See image No.2,3,4)─

We can see that both load-bearing structures (slabs and mezzanines) follow a spatial grid in reinforced concrete, where the presence of iron as a load beaming structure was.

The value of the structural work is unequivocal and adheres to the architecture work.

This is how the use of reinforced concrete and the grided slabes of the spatialy structure makes the building in question possesses an effective efficient. Likewise courtain belong to the rationalist period of the time. We can acotain that the system used for construction system used in this case, has largely solved the spatial necesarity and aditives itself with the aesthetics of the building.

Al analizar los diferentes componentes espaciales estéticos, podemos afirmar que, lejos de sufrir un rechazo total; así como muchos edificios dentro de la ciudad, se ha buscado una perfecta integración de conjunto, engalanando las fachadas con las obras de los maestros Goyri, Recinos y Mérida…, pero lejos de éste aspecto, también hay que remitirnos a su composición dentro de su emplazamiento que fue muy bien lograda y sobre todo a la experiencia sensitiva que le da éste valor, ya que, «hoy día, parece más lógico pensar en una estética que comprenda no solo las emociones sino también las sensaciones»[2], puesto que la belleza «no es una característica exclusivamente inmaterial o metafísica…por el contrario puede ser material y pertenecer a la materia»[3]

Todo valor artístico indudablemente nos asocia hacia la experiencia estética propiamente dicha al arte, cuando el término de bellas artes surge en el siglo XVIII.

Obviamente el proceso de conceptualización sobre la misma estética o bien lo bello, sufrió muchos cambios y a su vez la teorización de la misma, sin embargo, como menciona el Abate Du Bos «la creación artística depende del genio del artista»[4] por lo tanto, las diversas pericias presentes para su ejecución por parte de los autores, aúnan al conjunto de edificios en estudio éste valor, ya que el conocer, sentir, saber hacer y hacer están presentes en cada arista de los edificios. “

Podemos afirmar que dentro del lenguaje empleado para la realización de ésta obra, así mismo para el conjunto donde se emplaza, posee un único “estilo”, aunque contradictoriamente Le Corbuiser comenta “La arquitectura está reprimida por la costumbre, los estilos son una mentira” [5] sin embargo, todo ello lo caracteriza y lo torna irrepetible a nivel nacional, aunque, “el objetivo de la arquitectura moderna también consistía en lograr independencia respecto al lugar y la naturaleza.”[6] Pero afortunadamente se omitió todo ello para dar lugar con el paso de los años a una integración monumental y contextual.

Y es aquí precisamente donde radica el verdadero valor de los inmuebles, pues, no vemos ninguna repetición del mismo dentro y fuera del país, ya que de lo contrario se tornaría arquetípico y de plataforma. Por ello la esencia de éste valor es su originalidad, ya que “la nueva estética resulta de un claro análisis de funciones”[7]

Además podemos asegurar que todo el complejo arquitectónico; ontológicamente es: «dinamicista, emergentista, sistemista, cientificista y exacta»[8]

Adentrándonos hacia los aspectos compositivos y geométricos, vemos claramente que cada una de ellas corresponde a una necesidad simple bajo un pensamiento relativamente racionalista.

Dado que en el momento preciso de su construcción y sobre todo de las nuevas reflexiones arquitectónicas por parte de los arquitectos a cargo de ella, obedecía a la escuela racionalista, donde los edificios muestran una sencillez compositiva y modular, dejando a la vista sus estructuras, el material con que fue hecho; en este caso el concreto reforzado, y naturalmente el diseño de sus parteluces como parte de su estética. Es así como “…se da énfasis a la necesidad de una integración ambiental e identidad Guatemalteca por medio del diseño de los edificios.”[9]

A todo ello se une la transformación del espacio que lo emplaza dejando a la vista la unidad y el criterio mismo de sus integraciones, como bien menciona Rogelio Salmona con respecto a la incorporación de los edificios “La arquitectura debe… respetar una escala orgánica del espacio y un principio de organización de lo construido para no seguir sacrificando la realidad de sus sitios…”[10]Por otro lado el valor agregado también lo adquieren no solamente por la función de sus instalaciones y el carácter formal del mismo, sino también por la adición de los murales realizados por el maestro plástico Carlos Mérida, Goyri, etc., dándole una originalidad en nuestro país, y que a su vez expresa el eminente progreso de la nación.

También vemos que en todo su conjunto geométrico mantiene la unidad en cuanto a composición, armonía, texturas y lenguaje, con respecto a otros edificios públicos en la ciudad, permitiendo de esta manera una perfecta integración. Como menciona Le Corbusier “Arquitectura es cuestión de armonías, una pura creación del espíritu.”[11]

Ahora bien, al referirnos a todos aquellos valores históricos que naturalmente enmarcan y significan al edificio, porque “…hoy todo lo que es material es pensado, concebido a través de su génesis, su historia.” [12] ya que la idea de progreso que embargó la revolución guatemalteca en el año 1944, fue un determinante para la construcción de todos ellos; ya que fueron destinados como representativos de la economía en progreso, de nuevas ideologías de gobernabilidad y estabilidad, por lo tanto fueron trasladados de su ubicación hacia su nuevo emplazamiento.

Hoy día de igual forma, su lenguaje arquitectónico y su expresión formal compositiva del conjunto, muestran esa solidez con que dieron inicio y que actualmente se concentra la mayoría de los poderes ejecutivos del estado.

Independientemente de cada edificio y por ende sus diversos servicios a prestar hacia la población guatemalteca, el centro cívico contiene un grado de cohesión social debido a la categoría, función y ubicación dentro del complejo arquitectónico y por ende los servicios que en ella se adquieren, así como el rol protagónico que en cada uno de los ciudadanos adquiere al simple hecho de visitarle, puesto que no es un simple “que hacer” cotidiano que los enmarca como presencia, sino ha adquirido una “pertenencia” de nuestra cultura. Por ello no podemos omitir ni mucho menos aislar a cada uno de ellos por aparte, ya que el conjunto muestra un sinnúmero de características propias que los enlazan uno con otro.

De ésta manera, el centro cívico actúa de manera en conjunto con los demás edificios, trayendo una significación dentro de la cultura nacional, y por qué no decirlo, a nivel internacional, como centro de desarrollo económico y financiero como punto de partida hacia la era contemporánea.

Se dice que el valor autoral contiene una característica peculiar y particular, y es cuando la obra arquitectónica a analizar, es ó fue realizada por un autor importante.

A ciencia cierta podemos afirmar que no solamente contribuyó un solo autor para su realización sino varios, como lo veremos más adelante, sino también la participación de varios artistas plásticos en cuanto a los murales interiores y bajos relieves en sus fachadas de cada edificio, por lo cual podemos afirmar que aún hoy día contiene un grado de originalidad y autenticidad en la sociedad y el resto de los países latinoamericanos.

No se puede aislar al objeto arquitectónico de su contexto y tratar de valorarlo como tal sin tener en cuenta su emplazamiento, esto implica contemplar la realidad como un todo estructurado y no solamente la imagen, puesto que el todo “está en constante desarrollo, por lo que no se pude considerarse como inmutable, sino que en su transformación continua debe incluso requerir de una revisión constante”[13]

El centro cívico ─como todo el conjunto de edificios que lo conforman─ poseen un gran valor, no solamente arquitectónico, sino también cultural, social, antropológico y económico, puesto que lleva consigo un significante que caracteriza a todo el país como parte de una identidad cultural. De esta manera, el conjunto no se mueve independientemente sino por el contrario de una forma grupal o compleja; como menciona Edgar Morín “Una idea de unidad compleja que enlace el pensamiento analítico reduccionista al pensamiento global, en una dialectización”[14].

Al referirnos al valor ambiental, podemos decir que al igual que el renglón anterior, todo el conjunto de edificios que conforman el centro cívico posee una fuerte presencia significativa dentro de la sociedad guatemalteca, dotando al complejo una perfecta armonía con su entorno y emplazamiento, de manera tal que la lectura de sus códigos arquitectónicos nos remite hacia una sociedad pasada y cambiante que busca el progreso y que manifiesta estabilidad.

The architectural complex of the Civic Center

As mentioned Le Corbusier "Architecture is a matter of harmonies, a pure creation of the spirit." [11]

However, when referring to all those historical values that fall naturally into the building and mean, because "… today all that is material is designed, conceived through its genesis, its history." [12] and that the idea of progress cautivated that the Guatemalan revolution in the year 1944, was a decisive factor in the construction of all of them, since they were intended as a representative of the economy as progress, new ideologies of governance and stability, thus they were moved its location to its new location.

Today in the same way, his architectural language and its formal expression compositional whole show with such solidity that began and currently concentrates most of the executive powers of the state.

Regardless of each building and hence its various services to provide to the Guatemalan people, the civic centre contains a degree of social cohesion because of the category, function and location within the building complex and hence the services it buys, and and the leading role that each citizen acquires the simple fact visit, as it is not a simple "to do" daily that framed as a presence, but has acquired a "membership" of our culture. Therefore we can not omit much less isolating each of them apart, as the universe shows a host of characteristics that link to each other.

This way, the civic centre acted together with the other buildings, bringing significance in the national culture, and why not say, at the international level, as a centre for economic and financial development as a starting point towards the era contemporary.

It is said that the value authorial contains a feature peculiar and particular, and when the architectural work is to analyse, or it was done by an author important.

For sure we can say that not only contributed a single author for his conduct but several, as we shall see later, but also the participation of several artists in terms of interior murals and bas-reliefs in their facades of each building, so which we can say that even today contains a degree of originality and authenticity in society and the rest of Latin American countries.

You can not isolate the object of their architectural context and try to value it as such, regardless of their location, this involves contemplating reality as a whole and not just structured image, as the entire "is in constant development, so it can not be regarded as immutable, but in its ongoing transformation should even require constant review "[13]

The Civic Centre ─ as the entire set of buildings that make up ─ have great value not only architectural, but also cultural, social, economic and anthropological since it carries with it significant that characterizes the entire country as part of an identity cultural. Thus, the set does not move independently but rather a form of group or complex as mentioned Edgar Morin "An image of the liaison unit complex analytical thinking reductionist thinking globally, in a dialectización" [14].

When referring to the environmental value, we can say that like the previous line and all the buildings that make up the Civic Centre has a strong presence significantly within Guatemalan society, giving the complex a perfect harmony with its environment and location, so that the reading of their architectural codes goes back to a past and changing society that seeks progress and expressing stability.

Análisis Histórico y Arquitectónico del complejo.

“El pasado fue; en su momento, presente, y éste a su vez, futuro de aquél”[1]

A partir del siglo XX, principalmente con la revolución, la imagen urbana y la concepción de los nuevos edificios proyectados hacia las funciones públicas gubernamentales; y encaminados a una nueva proposición estética, obedecería y predominaría el pensamiento racionalista y los planteamientos de la escuela de la Bauhaus. Es así como; con el correr de los años, la nueva visión y la forma de hacer arquitectura cambiaría totalmente las concepciones del espacio, ya que”Los nuevos tiempos exigen su propia expresión”[2] así como a las intervenciones reflexivas de Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, y Frank Lloyd Wright ─entre otros─, haciendo llegar a varias escuelas facultativas a nivel mundial, el nuevo pensamiento arquitectónico.

En Guatemala, varios profesionales formados en el exterior tales como el Arq. Carlos Haeussler, Arq. Raúl Minondo, Arq. Roberto Aycinena, ─entre otros─ retornan al país con éste nuevo pensamiento para las nuevas propuestas arquitectónicas.

Pero el concepto de plaza cívica como le conocemos hoy día, su origen se remonta hasta los griegos; cuando todas ellas eran destinadas para la educación e información del ciudadano. Naturalmente con el desarrollo de la humanidad y el propio pensamiento, todo ello cambiaría.

Sin embargo, no es sino hasta principios del siglo XX que el nuevo concepto es retomado para los planteamientos urbanísticos en toda Latinoamérica.

Es así como el Congreso Internacional de Arquitectura Moderna (CIAM) “reconoció que el estudio de los problemas de la arquitectura moderna estaba ligado al de los urbanistas y que no era posible trazar una línea clara de separación entre unos y otros” [3] dado lo cual, se replantea y se reflexiona el rol del “centro” como protagonista antagónica de la sociedad cambiante, ya que desbaratada de su innegable riqueza cultural y antropológica, los nuevos arquitectos retoman los viejos valores para convertirlas en parte del espacio arquitectónico.

Por lo tanto, las nuevas funciones sociales de los centros o “núcleos” es el unir a la población o ciudadano “y facilitar los contactos directos y el intercambio de ideas que estimulen la libre discusión”[4] ya que todo ella estaba diezmada y reprimida por la eminente represión gubernamental militarista.

Ante todo ello, la CIAM, propone que estos nuevos espacios dedicados a la población en general, y que albergarían a los edificios públicos, reúnan las características que brinden una vinculación entre arte, arquitectura y sociedad, pero sobre todo el valor de pertenencia, ya que “[…] los factores principales que determinarán su forma definitiva serán: unas distancias tales que puedan fácilmente ser recorridas a pie; una fisonomía arquitectónica que resulte agradable a la vista…”[5] , pero éste agrado, va enfocado a la integración plástica en su conjunto arquitectónico con las intervenciones de los artistas plásticos. De éste modo es como nacería el concepto de “corazón de la ciudad” propuesto por la CIAM, que tendría como objetivo principal “La educación visual…a la gente sin esfuerzo de su parte…”[6]

De esta manera, en toda Latinoamérica, tales como México, Brasil, Venezuela, Argentina y Guatemala, encuentran en sus nuevos “corazones de ciudad” la perfecta integración de las artes aplicadas con la arquitectura, ya que “Estos centros de comunidad ya no serían, pues, solo lugares de reunión para la población local, sino también anfiteatros desde donde podrían contemplar el mundo entero”[7] para que de alguna manera “Las obras pictóricas y plásticas podrían formar parte de una exposición permanente, siguiendo un sistema de rotación…Los inventores de nuestro tiempo, podrían de este modo participar de la vida de la comunidad en esos lugares de reunión cotidiana, y ayudarían a poner en contacto los países más remotos.”[8]

En el caso de Guatemala, podemos afirmar que dicho postulado fue llevado a la práctica, ya que todo el Centro Cívico, — (ver imagen No.1)— cuenta con éstas características y que además una parte fundamental para su función, “fue concebir todas las plantas bajas de los edificios como salas de exposiciones permanentes e itinerantes sobre arte,” como lo afirma los Arquitectos Jorge Montes y Carlos Hausseler , en una entrevista realizada por Msc. Arqta. Sonia Fuentes[9]o bien como dice la propia CIAM “Un nuevo acercamiento entre las artes plásticas enriquecerá el lenguaje arquitectónico, y esta colaboración ayudará a la propia arquitectura a desarrollar mayores valores plásticos, mayor calidad escultórica.”[10]

En tal virtud, podemos observar que los edificios principales del Centro Cívico fueron creados con ésta misma ideología y manifestada elocuentemente en sus paramentos y configuraciones espaciales, haciendo la acotación que el propio arquitecto se ha de encargar de la manifestación plástica del edificio para alcanzar dicho objetivo, dada la recomendación de la CIAM, “La colaboración integral se halla ligada a la concepción del edificio, actuando a menudo el mismo arquitecto como escultor y pintor, o bien en estrecha colaboración con aquellos artistas.”[11], e incluso, si se carecía del talento, el profesional se encargaría de proyectar el edifico con la ayuda multidisciplinaria de varios artistas en la rama. Además se priorizaba en que cada uno de los trabajos por realizar deberían de estar encaminados a una perfecta integración sin existir un divorcio entre arte y arquitectura, —(ver imagen No.2)— ya que “Los trabajos de todos ellos no pueden ser separados y la colaboración ha de ser llevada adelante, como labor en conjunto, desde el principio hasta el fin”

Es así como el concepto de un nuevo planteamiento urbano, converge hacia la elaboración de un nuevo “corazón de ciudad”, — (ver imagen No.3) — que abarcaría; no solamente los edificios gubernamentales, sino también de recreación y otras entidades, ya que la planificación original comprendería toda la ciudad olímpica, el teatro nacional, torre de tribunales, etc., como parte de una nueva visión y estilo de vida ciudadana.

Pero también hay que aclarar que no solamente se construyó el Centro Cívico durante la época sino también existieron otras obras civiles y arquitectónicas relevantes, ya que durante el gobierno de Juan José Arévalo se “creó instituciones de positivo beneficio para el desarrollo del país”[13], tales como: El Instituto de Seguridad Social Guatemalteco (IGSS), el Instituto de Nutrición de Centroamérica y Panamá (INCAP), el Instituto de Antropología e Historia (IDAEH), el Instituto Indígena, el Banco de Guatemala, las Escuelas Tipo Federación, y la creación de la Facultad de Humanidades, de la Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala. “Como parte del interés de Arévalo por la cultura y la educación, podemos comprender su apoyo al resurgimiento de bibliotecas, asociaciones culturales, círculos de escritores, de revistas, entre otras.”[14]

Mientras que en el gobierno del general Jacobo Arbenz, se inicia los proyectos de “infraestructura básica”[15] o bien proyectos de obra civil, tales como: la Hidroeléctrica de Jurún-Marinalá; en Escuintla, Carretera al Atlántico y el Puerto de Sto. Tomás, cuyo nombre original obedecía al de Matías de Gálvez.

No es sino hasta el año de 1954, cuando en su afán de mostrar que el derrocamiento de Jacobo Arbenz, no traería cambios, que el nuevo presidente, Carlos Castillo Armas, autorizó la construcción del Centro Cívico, concebido en los gobiernos anteriores. De esta manera los arquitectos Roberto Aycinena, Jorge Montes, Carlos Haeussler y Pelayo Llerena, se dedicarían realizar este proyecto arquitectónico; es entonces que, los parques Navidad y Luna Park, la Penitenciaría Central y el Estadio Autonomía desaparecerían, para dar lugar al Centro Cívico de Guatemala.

Historic and Architectural Analysis of the complex.

"The past was, in due course, present, and this in turn, the future of one" [1]

From the twentieth century, mainly with the revolution, the urban image and the design of new buildings to the public governmental functions, and a new proposal aimed at aesthetics, and follow prevail rationalist thinking and approaches of the school Bauhaus. Thus, with the years, the new vision and way of doing architecture completely change conceptions of space, as "New times require its own expression" [2] as well as interventions reflective of Le Corbusier , Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright ─among others ─, getting several optional schools worldwide, the new architectural thinking.

In Guatemala, a number of professionals trained abroad such as the Arch. Carlos Haeussler, Arch. Raul Minondo, Arch. Roberto Aycinena, ─among others ─ returning to the country with this new thinking for the new architectural proposals.

But the concept of civic square as you know it today, its origin can be traced back to the Greeks, when all of them were intended for educating and informing the public. Of course with the development of mankind and the very thought, all this would change.

However, it was not until the early twentieth century that the new concept is retained for urban approaches throughout Latin America.

Thus, the International Congress of Modern Architecture (CIAM) "recognized that the study of the problems of modern architecture was linked to the planners and that it was not possible to draw a clear line of separation between the two" because [3] , it was a new approach and reflects the role of the "center" as antagonistic protagonist of the changing society, and that disrupted his undeniable cultural and anthropological new architects modelled old values to become part of architectural space.

Therefore, the new social functions of the centres or "core" is to unite the people or citizen "and facilitate direct contacts and the exchange of ideas that encourage free discussion" [4] because everything she was decimated and repressed by the eminent military government repression.

First of all, CIAM, proposed that these new spaces dedicated to the general public, and hosted at public buildings, combining the characteristics that provide a link between art, architecture and society, but especially the value of belonging, and "[…] the main factors that will determine its final form will be: some distances such that they can easily be covered on foot, an architectural face it pleasing to the eye…" [5], but it pleased, is focused on integration Plastic whole architecture with statements by the artists. In this mode is born as the concept of "heart of the city" proposed by the CIAM, which would have as its main objective "Education visual… to people without effort on their part…" [6]

Thus, throughout Latin America, such as Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina and Guatemala, in its new "city of hearts" seamless integration of the arts to architecture, since "These community centers were no longer thus only meeting places for the local population but also from amphitheaters where they could contemplate the world "[7] to somehow" paintings and plastic could form part of a permanent exhibition, according to a rotation system … The inventors of our time, could thus participate in community life in those places to meet daily, and help to contact the countries most remote. In the case of Guatemala, we can say that the premise was put into practice, because the entire Civic Center - (see image No.1) - has these features and also a vital part to its role, "was conceived all the lower floors of the buildings as permanent showrooms and itinerant art, "as affirmed by the Architects Carlos Hausseler and Jorge Montes, in an interview with Msc. Arqta. Sonia Fuentes [9] or in the words of CIAM own "A new rapprochement between the visual arts enrich the architectural language, and this collaboration will help to develop the very architecture highest values plastics, more sculptural quality." [10]

As such, we can see that the main buildings of the Civic Center were created with this same ideology and eloquently expressed in their adornments and spatial configurations, making refinements to the same architect has been commissioning of the demonstration plastic building to achieve that objective given the recommendation of CIAM, "The comprehensive partnership is linked to the design of the building, often acting the same architect as a sculptor and painter, or closely with those artists." Thus, the concept of a new approach to urban converging towards the development of a new "heart of town" - (see image No.3) - which would cover not only the government buildings, but also for recreation and others, since the original planning would encompass all the Olympic village, the National Theatre, Tower courts, and so on. as part of a new vision and way of life.

But we must also make it clear that not only built the Civic Center during the time but there were other civil works and architectural relevant, because during the government of Juan Jose Arevalo was "established institutions positive benefit to the development of the country" [13 ], such as: The Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS), the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama (INCAP), the Institute of Anthropology and History (IDAEH), the Indigenous Institute, the Bank of Guatemala, Schools type Federation and the creation of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of San Carlos in Guatemala. "As part of the interest of Arevalo for culture and education, we can understand their support for the resurgence of libraries, cultural organizations, circles of writers, magazines, among others." [14]

While the government of General Jacobo Arbenz, initiating projects "basic infrastructure" [15] or civil works projects, such as: Hydroelectric Jurún-Marinalá; in Escuintla, the Atlantic Road and the Port of Sto . Thomas, whose original name was due to Matias de Galvez.

It was not until the year 1954, when, in his eagerness to show that the overthrow of Jacobo Arbenz, would not change, the new president, Carlos Castillo Armas, authorized the construction of the Civic Center, which was conceived in the previous governments. In this way the architects Roberto Aycinena, Jorge Montes, Carlos Pelayo Haeussler and Llerena, would be devoted perform this architectural project, it is then that the parks Christmas and Luna Park, the Central Penitentiary and the Autonomy Stadium disappear, to lead the Civic Center Guatemala.

Guatemala con un inmenso legado urbano/arquitectónico por medio de sus raíces Mayas, ha contado su propia historia y el avance ideológico /conceptual a través de todas las manifestaciones artísticas y culturales.

Es así como las expresiones estéticas son el resultado de una "fusión" entre el folclore y la academia. Sin embargo, a lo que arquitectura se refiere, podemos decir que tanto sus sistemas constructivos como los materiales de construcción; desde la llegada de los Europeos, fueron cambiando y adecuándose a las características geográficas y topográficas del lugar, ya que ninguno de los viejos tratados de Serlio o Palladio traídos por los conquistadores, fueron reproducidos con exactitud debido a la intensa actividad sísmica que predomina en el país.

Por ello el concepto del estilo barroco, ultra barroco adquirirían una adaptación muy particular y con una originalidad que solamente pudo lograrse en nuestro país, un claro ejemplo es lo que encontramos en el convento e iglesia de la Merced en la ciudad de Antigua Guatemala.

Adentrándonos un poco más en nuestra historia y específicamente al avance conceptual del quehacer arquitectónico, podemos mencionar que con la llegada de la independencia muchos de los patrones predominantes en sus inmuebles obedecieron a una copia o interpretación extranjera, por lo que encontramos edificios con simplificación de ornamentación y una disposición del espacio arquitectónico al entorno natural donde se emplaza.

Sin embargo, vuelve a reaparecer en la nueva ciudad de Guatemala aquel viejo romanticismo por la antigua ciudad colonial ─con sus calles empedradas, los arcos de medio punto, etc.─ lo que da como resultado un Neo Colonial; siendo su edificio más representativo el Palacio de Correos ─ubicado en la 12 calle y 7a. avenida de la zona 1─ que a su vez muestra una interpretación del arco del convento de Sta. Catalina.

Posteriormente, con los cambios de gobierno y las nuevas políticas imperantes, el avance arquitectónico merma, llegando a ser casi exclusivamente para los terratenientes y entidades guberbamentales las siguientes contrucciones en nuestro país, por ello los edificios serían ─en su mayoría─estatales, tales como el edifico de Sanidad Pública, Registro de la Propiedad, etc.
A todo ello se suma la llegada de la 2da. Guerra Mundial, lo cual repercutirá en nuestro país y demás países Hispanoamericanos.

Superada toda "recesión" y los viejos paradigmas imperantes, la ciudad de Guatemala en la época comprendida entre los años 1952-1968, la producción arquitectónica comienza nuevamente a formular nuevas alternativas espaciales para la sociedad, pero lo más importante la forma de conceptualizar toma una nueva variante.

Es así como el nuevo legado arquitectónico expuesto por varios maestros arquitectos tales como Arq. Roberto Aycinena, Arq. Jorge Montes Córdova, Arq. Raúl Minondo, entre otros, dejarán una huella dentro de la sociedad guatemalteca con la construcción del Centro Cívico y la Ciudad Universitaria, campus central, que hoy día siguen siendo parte de nuestra representatividad.

Guatemala with an immense legacy urban / architectural through their roots Maya, has had its own history and progress ideological / conceptual across all cultural and artistic events.

Within a little more in our history, and specifically to advance conceptual architectural work, we can mention that with the advent of independence in predominan pattern many of its buildings were due to a copy or foreign interpretation, we found buildings with simplification of ornamentation and a provision of architectural space to the natural environment where they replaced.

However, once again reappear in the new Guatemala City that old romantic by the former colonial city ─ with its cobbled streets, semicircular arches, and so on. ─ which results in a Neo Colonial; building being the most representative Central Post ─ located in the 12 street and 7a. Avenue of zone 1 ─ which in turn shows an interpretation of the convent of Sta. Catalina arch.

Subsequently, with changes in government and the new political situation, progress architectural erosion, becoming almost exclusively for landowners and entities guberbamentales the following contrucciones in our country, why the buildings were ─mostly ─ state, such as the building of Public Health, Property Registry, and so on.

All of this is compounded by the arrival of the 2nd. World War, which will have an impact on our country and other countries Hispanoamericans.

Having overcome any "recession" and the old paradigms prevailing, Guatemala City in the time between the years 1952-1968, the architectural production begins again to make space for new alternatives for the company, but more importantly, how to take a conceptualize new variant.

Thus, the new architectural legacy described by several teachers architects such as Arch. Roberto Aycinena Arch. Jorge Montes Cordova, Arch. Raul Minondo, among others, a lasting cease within Guatemalan society with the construction of the Civic Center and the University City, central campus, which today are still part of our representation.

Los integrantes del equipo de trabajo se comprometen a organizar grupos de trabajo para registrar, catalogar y documentar al menos diez obras de la arquitectura moderna al año e incluirlas en el boletín electrónico.

2.2. Proyecto Especial Centro Cívico:
Este espacio urbano compuesto por varios edificios estatales, ubicado al extremo sur del Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de Guatemala, constituye un conjunto monumental del período moderno del urbanismo y la arquitectura, el objetivo de este proyecto es promover el acuerdo
gubernativo para nombrarlo patrimonio cultural de la nación. Este proyecto se trabajará en conjunto con la Maestría en diseño arquitectónico de la USAC, Departamento de Urbanística ( Municipalidad de Guatemala) y Dac. (ver fotografía No.1)

2.2. Special Project Civic Center:
This urban space comprising several government buildings, located at south of the Historic Center of Guatemala City, is a monumental period of modern urbanism and Architecture, the goal of this project is to promote the agreement Government to appoint cultural heritage of the nation.
This the project will work in conjunction with the Master of design
Architectural USAC, Urban Department (City Hall Building) and Dac. (See photograph No.1)

Lamentablemente al igual que en otros países, la sociedad guatemalteca no se ha caracterizado por apreciar el patrimonio arquitectónico moderno. Esto ha ocasionado que muchos edificios representativos a éste período de nuestra historia hayan sido demolidos, para dar paso a otras necesidades espaciales, dando paso a la destrucción del legado histórico.Naturalmente el impacto que la ignorancia ha ocasionado en estos casos es irreversible. Por eso es necesario impulsar todas aquellas actividades que orienten sus esfuerzos a sensibilizar y educar a la sociedad, para contribuir de alguna manera, a mitigar estas pérdidas lamentables y negativas.

A raíz de esta problemática que se extiende a nivel internacional, se funda la organización no gubernativa de : do. co. mo. mo. que tiene a cargo la DOcumentación y la COnservación de la arquitectura, los sitios y el patrimonio arquitectónico del MOvimiento MOderno. [ http://www.docomomo.com/ ]

Sus principales objetivos fueron expresadas al final de la conferencia de fundación de 1990 en el Manifiesto de Einhoven.

Es por ello, que hemos formado un equipo de trabajo de profesionales en la rama, para alcanzar el aval de do. co. mo. mo. internacional, y de esta manera valorizar y preservar nuestra arquitectura moderna.
